SWOP Youth Defend Right to Drive

Two of our youth interns spoke with the Albuquerque Journal yesterday to weigh in on a proposal to refuse driving permits to youth that don't meet certain academic requirements. Lillian and Samantha did a good job representing for the youth that are targeted by this policy.

With all the discussions lately and suggestions for improving our education in the state, you'd think they would come up with a better solution than punishing low-income and minority students. You'd think.

You can see the article at the Journal's website.

Interested in contributing to this discussion? A public hearing will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 14 in Mabry Hall, in the Jerry Apodaca Education Building at 300 Don Gaspar in Santa Fe. Written comments can be submitted to Willie Brown in the PED's Office of General Counsel. Brown can be reached by mail at 300 Don Gaspar in Santa Fe, 87501 or by e-mail at Willie.Brown1@state.nm.us.

Great Job! This does sound like another attack on poor people. What about all them youth that are not in school for what ever reason, are they not entitled to getting a driving permit? Back in October of 2009 Lillian introduced herself as a youth on the verge of dropping out of school to help her family money wise. What kind of effect would this have not only on you but her family? You need to get to work somehow. BUT GLAD you stayed in school it'll pay off more in the long run.

Driving is not a right for anyone. It's a privilege.

"Right to Drive"?

Find me somewhere in the Constitution, the laws of this country or state or even case law an explicit right to drive. Driving is a privilege. Not a right.
