How I got here...

Growing up in a politically active family is one of the most fortunate opportunities I have. Learning of injustices and culture at a young age made me very aware of my environment, surroundings, and community. It has influenced me to be involved in my community and the Social Justice Movement. This knowledge has also allowed me to form my own political opinions.

When I was younger my mom and dad ran La Raza Unida Youth Committee here in Albuquerque. They brought my brother and I to every meeting. There I learned about my history, about past revolutionary leaders, about struggles and victories in the Chicano Movement, and about my culture. From there on out, my view of the world has been through the eyes of a young Chipina, a woman of color, wanting to make positive change for her community and her people.

Having this background has given me many incredible opportunities and experiences. I've been able to participate in many trainings, gatherings, events, and protests surrounding different issues concerning the Social Justice Movement. All of which, have encouraged me to continue my involvement and to continue learning.

The most recent opportunity I've been given is the opportunity to be the Communications Intern here at SWOP. So far it's been great! I'm looking forward to the many experiences I will encounter during the course of my internship. I'm sure I will learn plenty and get the chance to strengthen the skills I have.
